We're a'movin...Part 2

Good grief, we're at it again...

After trying out LybSyn as our main blogpage for the past month, we've decided to return to the Blogger format. Why the flip-flop? First, I've recently learned that we can install the LibSyn media player on our Blogger page. Second, since exams have been over, I've taken the time to check out Blogger's new "Beta" features, and have been really impressed. So, I've re-vamped our original page with a new look, and a few new features.

Enjoy the user-friendly media player, which is always loaded up with the most recent podcast of "The Nookular Option". One of our visitors recommended a larger font for posts and comments, which I actually like quite a bit, now that I've tried it. Also, I found some improved "recent comments" HTML.

For the purpose of updating bookmarks, if you have us as nookularoption.com, you should be redirected to our Blogger page (and thus, probably won't see this). Otherwise, you'll want to update your "Nookular Option" bookmark to http://nookularoption.blogspot.com/.

And I promise we won't do this again any time soon, if at all. Look for the podcast of Thursday's show, which should be posted be tomorrow at the latest.

Don

Next Up, Moon Wars?

Not much to comment on this just yet, but this is an interesting article:

MANKIND'S second race for the moon has taken on a distinctly Cold War feel, with the Russian space agency accusing its old rival NASA of rejecting a proposal for joint lunar exploration.

The charge comes amid suspicion in Moscow that the US is seeking to deny Russia access to an isotope in abundance under the moon's surface that many believe could replace fossil fuels and even end the threat of global warming.

A new era of international co-operation in space supposedly dawned after the US, Russia and other powers declared their intention to send humans to the moon for the first time since 1972...[more]

I would like to submit that this story will be the backdrop for the next James Bond movie.

Monday's Show--Cliff Schecter

Be sure to tune into Monday's show, as Don and I will talk to Cliff Schecter. Here's Cliff's bio according to The Huffington Post:

Cliff Schecter is a veteran campaign strategist and political commentator. Schecter writes a monthly column distributed by Knight Ridder and was a guest columnist for United Press International from 2002-2004. His work has been featured in a variety of publications including The Miami Herald, The American Prospect, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Fordham Urban Law Journal, The Sacramento Bee and Salon.com. He blogs for The Gadflyer and writes a weekly satirical column each Friday called "Cliff's Corner," summarizing the week's most ridiculous events for AMERICAblog. Surprisingly, Tom DeLay gets mentioned a lot.

During the 2004 election cycle, Schecter worked as the "liberal" pundit for The Sinclair Broadcast Group, where he debated conservative Armstrong Williams -- for significantly less cost to the White House. He has also appeared on CNN, CNBC, NPR FoxNews, The Canadian Broadcast Channel and Al Jazeera. Additionally, Schecter has provided analysis on American politics for international diplomats, journalists, students and politicians as part of The State Department Bureau of International Information Programs.

Schecter holds an MA in International Affairs from the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs and is currently receiving his Ph.D. in American History as a Dean's Honors Fellow at American University.

Schecter was a pollster for the successful reelection of President Bill Clinton in 1996 and fundraiser for former Governor of Virginia Mark Warner in 2001. He has also consulted for the DNC, DCCC and some other candidates he won't mention here because they lost.

Also here is some of his work on MSNBC:

The House of Representatives is voting on a bill that would allow Feds to work with local police to prosecute hate crimes. The bill is called The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

So why is James Dobson against this? Here's what he says about the bill:

"the true intent of the legislation is not to punish what is already illegal. It is to muzzle people of faith who dare to express their moral and biblical concerns about homosexuality."

How so? By beating up homosexuals? Is that how "people of faith" express their biblical concerns? How about this wacko:

"Under a false banner of fighting hate, these liberals have demonstrated that they are the haters and their targets are Americans who believe in God and His teachings," said Rev. Louis P. Sheldon

Of course, these groups have the President's ear. So a veto of this bill is a possibility. These groups are claiming a bill like this could curtail freedom of speech rights. But I disagree. You can say whatever you want, but then if you go beat the shit out of someone then it's you who are violating someone's rights.

The National Popular Vote

This is a great article by Jamie Raskin, who is a Maryland state senator and a professor of constitutional law at American University's Washington College of Law. He discusses changes that would take all Electoral College votes in every state, and give them to the winner of the popular vote in the presidential election. Here are some highlights from the article:

The presidential campaign planes fly over all of us in red and blue America in search of âswing votersâ? in the dwindling set of âswing states.â? Fully 99 percent of presidential campaign funding in the last two cycles went to move voters in a mere 16 states, and two-thirds of the money was poured into five states. The majority of Americans have become long-distance spectators to the exciting action in the battleground states where issues are debated and campaign ads air. We watch as the candidates, the campaign staff and the media bear down on Florida, Ohio, New Mexico and a handful of others states blessed with closely divided electorates. Voter turn-out in the general election sometimes approaches 70 percent in the swing states but hovers in the mid-50s in demoralized spectator states, driving our national turn-out rates down to among the lowest on earth.

Public opinion polls have long shown that upwards of 65 percent of Americans favor a direct national popular vote for president in which all of our votes count equally. The puzzle has been how to reconcile a national popular election with the antique mechanics of the Electoral College, which Thomas Jefferson called âthe most dangerous blot on our Constitution.â?

The National Popular Vote plan rests on the powers that states have to create interstate compacts and to appoint electors. Article II, Section I provides: âEach State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electorsââ? This power has been deployed by legislatures in different ways. When the nation began, the legislatures mostly named Electors directly and they operated as a deliberative body and voted their consciences. In 1800, for example, Maryland saw seven of its electors vote for Adams and four for Jefferson. When states began in the last century to award their electors in winner-take-all fashion based on a statewide popular vote, smaller states complained that this newfangled âunitâ? bloc voting diluted the power of small states (and they were right). They sued. In the aptly named Delaware v. New York in 1966, the Supreme Court rejected this challenge and emphasized that the statesâ power to award electors may be exercised in any manner they see fit. The power is âplenary.â?

I like this plan for a couple of reasons. First, it brings back the idea of "one person, one vote". Currently, if you live in a predominately red or blue state your vote goes nowhere if you are on the losing side. I think this helps lead to low voter turnout.

Also, this forces candidate to campaign to the entire nation--not just a few "swing states" as the article points out. A voter in Vermont (3 electoral votes) is just as important as a voter in California (55 electoral votes). This is the American way. I think we need to give this National Popular Vote plan more attention.

Proving God's Existence?

I received this heads-up from the People for the American Way:

Mark your calendars, because on May 5, former child star Kirk Cameron and âbest-selling author Ray Comfortâ? are going to âprove God's existence, absolutely, scientifically, without mentioning the Bible or faith.â? Cameron has, like others on the Right, blamed school shootings on the teaching of evolution:

ABC â will host a debate in New York City on May 5, 2007. Moderated by Martin Bashir, the debate will be streamed LIVE on their website and will also be filmed for "Nightline."

Cameron ("Growing Pains" sitcom and Left Behind movies) will speak on what he believes is a major catalyst for atheism: Darwinian evolution. The popular actor stated, "Evolution is unscientific. In reality, it is a blind faith that's preached with religious zeal as the gospel truth. I'm embarrassed to admit that I was once a naÃve believer in the theory. The issue of intelligent design is extremely relevant at the moment. Atheism has become very popular in universities--where it's taught that we evolved from animals and that there are no moral absolutes. So we shouldn't be surprised when there are school shootings.â?â.

"Most people equate atheism with intellectualism," Comfort added, "but it's actually an intellectual embarrassment. I am amazed at how many people think that God's existence is a matter of faith. It's not, and I will prove it at the debate - once and for all. This is not a joke. I will present undeniable scientific proof that God exists.

If Cameron and Comfort think that evolution â the basis of much modern science â is unscientific, what kinds of âscientificâ? arguments are we likely to hear from them? Maybe something like this, which just happens to be the second most viewed clip on GodTube:

Christian Terrorism?

Why isn't this kind of terrorism widely covered?

AUSTIN â A package left at a clinic that performs abortions contained an explosive device that investigators said Thursday could have been deadly.

The incident came just days after a national abortion group alerted providers around the country to an increased risk of violence.

The device, found in a duffle bag Wednesday, "was configured in such a way to cause serious bodily injury or death," said David Carter, assistant chief of the Austin Police Department.

The bomb, which was found in the parking lot of the Austin Women's Health Center, comes on the heels of last week's U.S. Supreme Court ruling which banned a controversial type of abortion and was viewed as an anti-abortion victory.

Was Al-Qaeda behind this deadly attempt? Maybe Hezbollah? Hamas? More likely, this was the work of some radical Christian group. Is it ok in this day and age to accept 41 bombing attempts?

In the last 30 years, abortion clinics have been bombed 41 times according to law enforcement statistics compiled by the National Abortion Federation. Many of the crimes directed at abortion providers, including 93 attempted bombings and arson, were committed during times that abortion issues were prominent in the news, Saporta said.

Funny how we can be fighting a "global war on terror", and yet this kind of thing happens in our backyard, and there's nary a peep from the media.

Framing the Iraq Debate

Don't play into their hands. For years now, the Bush administration has confused the American public by combining wars. We've been fighting Sunnis, Shiites, insurgents, Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, Iranian influence, etc.... If you want to call it a Global War, then fine let's do that. But let's get one thing straight (I'm talking to you Harry Reid, and the rest of the Dems)--we won the war in Iraq. We have captured and killed Sadam, we've defeated his army, helped them create a constitution, etc. Need further proof that we won? How's this:

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all very much. Admiral Kelly, Captain Card, officers and sailors of the USS Abraham Lincoln, my fellow Americans: Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed.

So when Harry Reid claims we have lost, he's not framing the argument correctly. What he should have said is that the current Bush strategy for post-Iraq rebuilding has failed. He should have said the Bush strategy for post-Iraq security has failed. He should have said the post-Iraq occupation is ill-conceived and needs to end. The Iraqi government and Iraqis in general need to fight for their country and determine their own course.

By claiming that we have lost in Iraq, Reid is playing into his opponents' hands, allowing them to say he (and all Dems by association) are soft on terror, blah blah blah. It's time to reframe this debate, and tell the truth. We won the war in Iraq, and now it's time to stop wasting our resources and work with our allies in breaking up terrorist groups in North Africa, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Syria

Cutting Poverty in Half

A new report from the Center for American Progress has come out, titled "From Poverty to Prosperity: A National Strategy to Cut Poverty in Half". The report lays out 12 steps to help create a strong middle class. Here's a brief list of the 12 steps:

1. Raise and index the minimum wage to half the average hourly wage.

2. Expand the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

3. Promote unionization by enacting the Employee Free Choice Act.

4. Guarantee child care assistance to low-income families and promote early education for all.

5. Create 2 million new âopportunityâ? housing vouchers, and promote equitable development in and around central cities.

6. Connect disadvantaged and disconnected youth with school and work.

7. Simplify and expand Pell Grants and make higher education accessible to residents of each state.

8. Help former prisoners find stable employment and reintegrate into their communities.

9. Ensure equity for low-wage workers in the Unemployment Insurance system.

10. Modernize means-tested benefits programs to develop a coordinated system that helps workers and families.

11. Reduce the high costs of being poor and increase access to financial services.

12. Expand and simplify the Saverâs Credit to encourage saving for education, homeownership, and retirement.

Articles of Impeachment; Dick Cheney

Here are some of the highlights of Dennis Kucinich's articles of impeachment against Dick Cheney. The full resolution can be accessed here.

Article I

In his conduct while Vice President of the United States, Richard B. Cheney, in violation of his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the office of Vice President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify the use of the United States Armed Forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security interests, to wit:

(1) Despite all evidence to the contrary, the Vice President actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States about an alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction...

(2) Preceding the March 2003 invasion of Iraq 20 the Vice President was fully informed that no legitimate evidence existed of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The Vice President pressured the intelligence community to change their findings to enable the deception of the citizens and Congress of the United States.

(3) The Vice Presidentâs actions corrupted or attempted to corrupt the 2002 National Intelligence Estimate, an intelligence document issued on October 1, 2002 and carefully considered by Congress prior to the October 10, 2002 vote to authorize the use of force. The Vice Presidentâs actions prevented the necessary reconciliation of facts for the National Intelligence Estimate which resulted in a high number of dissenting opinions from technical experts in two Federal agencies.

The Vice President subverted the national security interests of the United States by setting the stage for the loss of more than 3300 United States service members; the loss of 650,000 Iraqi citizens since the United States invasion; the loss of approximately $500 billion in war costs which has increased our Federal debt; the loss of military readiness within the United States Armed Services due to overextension, lack of training and lack of equipment; the loss of United States credibility in world affairs; and the decades of likely blowback created by the invasion of Iraq. In all of this, Vice President Richard B. Cheney has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as Vice President, and subversive of constitutional government, to the prejudice of the cause of law and justice and the manifest injury of the people of the United States.Wherefore, Vice President Richard B. Cheney, by such conduct, is guilty of an impeachable offense warranting removal from office.

Article II

In his conduct while Vice President of the United States, Richard B. Cheney, in violation of his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the office of Vice President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda in order to justify the use of the United States Armed Forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security interests, to wit:

(1) Despite all evidence to the contrary, the Vice President actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and the Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda...

(2) Preceding the March 2003 invasion of Iraq the Vice President was fully informed that no credible evidence existed of a working relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda, a fact articulated in several official documents, including...

Article III

In his conduct while Vice President of the United States, Richard B. Cheney, in violation of his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the office of Vice President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has openly threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran absent any real threat to the United States, and done so with the United States proven capability to carry out such threats, thus undermining the national security of the United States, to wit:

(1) Despite no evidence that Iran has the intention or the capability of attacking the United States and despite the turmoil created by United States invasion of Iraq, the Vice President has openly threatened aggression against Iran as evidenced by the following:

(2) The Vice President, who repeatedly and falsely claimed to have had specific, detailed knowledge of Iraqâs alleged weapons of mass destruction capabilities, is no doubt fully aware of evidence that demonstrates Iran poses no real threat to the United States as evidenced by the following:

(3) The Vice President is fully aware of the actions taken by the United States towards Iran that are further destabilizing the world as evidenced by the following...

(4) In the last three years the Vice President has repeatedly threatened Iran. However, the Vice President is legally bound by the U.S Constitutionâs adherence to international law that prohibits threats of use of force...

Wherefore Richard B. Cheney, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office.

Giuliani Threatens America

Rudy Giuliani threatened Americans with another 9/11 attack if we vote for a Democratic president in 2008:

From The Politico

MANCHESTER, N.H. - - Rudy Giuliani said if a Democrat is elected president in 2008, America will be at risk for another terrorist attack on the scale of Sept. 11, 2001....[more]

Sorry Rudy, but you seem to forget it was a Republican in the White House when 9/11 happened, despite the warning signs. Remember all the meetings Bush had regarding bin Laden from January '01 thru September '01? Neither do I.

What So Radical 'Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding?

Recent comments by Senator John Cornyn got me thinking about the "radical anti-war left". Consider his comment about Harry Reid:

CORNYN: I think this is just crass politics. Senator Reid is playing to the worst elements of the antiwar left. That's part of unfortunately his political base. But I think, you know, we need to be more responsible. We need to try to not make this a partisan issue.

Or consider this comment at the end of a Townhall article:

"...while the Democratic Party -- now fully revealed as a radical, anti-war, far-left party"

Apparently, the majority of Americans are radical anti-war loons. According to this Pew Poll, 53% of Americans want the troops home now. Of course, it's easy to see what they're doing here. By branding the opposition as radical in some way, you hope that any fence-sitters (so crucial in elections nowadays) will want to distance themselves. In fact, in my opinion "anti-war" is also a misnomer. If a war is just, and only as a last option, or in response to an attack I think war is unfortunately justified sometimes (surprise, the majority of Americans think this way as well). But Iraq is none of these.

But I also have a problem with those that claim the war "is lost". On the contrary, President Bush declared the US and allies victorious in his infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech. It's true, we have already won the war. Saddam has been toppled. Most Iraqis supported his ousting (even if we radicals thought it unnecessary). What the ongoing violence is showing us however, is that Iraqis do not support the current occupation. Time to get out.

Kucinich to Push for Cheney Impeachment

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Cleveland congressman Dennis Kucinich sent his Democratic colleagues a two-sentence email this morning announcing imminent plans to introduce "Articles of Impeachment with respect to the conduct of Vice President Cheney."

"Please have your staff contact my office," the missive continued,"if you would like to receive a confidential copy of the document prior to its introduction in the House."

Kucinich press secretary Natalie Laber refused to comment on Kucinich's email or to provide any more information about his efforts to push for Cheney's impeachment. The Plain Dealer obtained the email from a different Democratic congressional office...[more]

Good for him. He said that he kept receiving letters from his district calling for impeachment, so he's just following the will of the voters. Sounds like something a Representative is supposed to do. The consensus is to try to impeach Cheney first. If Bush were to be impeached, we'd seriously be fucked with Cheney in command. I don't imagine this first attempt would go anywhere. However, I still think it's important to start the process and get the discussions flowing. The more the idea is accepted as a possibility, the greater chance this will have down the road. Go Dennis!

What is a Well Regulated Militia?

The 2nd Amendment:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Ok, so what exactly is a "well regulated militia"? Is a militia now what we consider the National Guard? Is it the entire pool of eligible citizens that could be called upon at a moment's notice ? Or is the 2nd Amendment simply intended to grant individuals with the right to bear arms? If it is the latter, what makes these individuals "well regulated"?

I guess my basic question boils down to this. Is the 2nd Amendment intended to ensure individuals the right to bear arms, or is it more of a question of state's rights to ensure that (well regulated) militias have the right to bear arms to protect the security of a free state?

Btw, one of the more asinine things I've heard about gun control laws came from Neal Boortz. He argued that gun control laws would simply make it more difficult for law-abiding people to get guns, and not the criminals. Boortz disregards the fact that Seung-hui Cho was law-abiding when he bought his guns.

Bush Involved in Prosecuter Purge?

According to an article in the Albuquerque Journal, President Bush may have been behind the firing of David Iglesias:

Former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias was fired after Sen. Pete Domenici, who had been unhappy with Iglesias for some time, made a personal appeal to the White House, the Journal has learned.
Domenici had complained about Iglesias before, at one point going to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales before taking his request to the president as a last resort.
The senior senator from New Mexico had listened to criticism of Iglesias going back to 2003 from sources ranging from law enforcement officials to Republican Party activists.
Domenici, who submitted Iglesias' name for the job and guided him through the confirmation process in 2001, had tried at various times to get more white-collar crime help for the U.S. Attorney's OfficeÃ?? even if Iglesias didn't want it.
At one point, the six-term Republican senator tried to get Iglesias moved to a Justice Department post in Washington, D.C., but Iglesias told Justice officials he wasn't interested.
In the spring of 2006, Domenici told Gonzales he wanted Iglesias out.
Gonzales refused. He told Domenici he would fire Iglesias only on orders from the president.
At some point after the election last Nov. 6, Domenici called Bush's senior political adviser, Karl Rove, and told him he wanted Iglesias out and asked Rove to take his request directly to the president.
Domenici and Bush subsequently had a telephone conversation about the issue....[read more]

This story is alot bigger than just some attorney firings. The Bush administration was clearly setting up a legal staff that was designed to go after Democrats in states where elections were being held, as a part of their "Permanent Majority" delusion. Thank God for the November elections, and for true watchdog journalism by blogs like TPM Muckraker.

Halliburton Working for Iran??

From the NY Times:

The Halliburton Company said yesterday that its subsidiary that does business in Iran had completed all its commitments and was no longer working in the country.

In January 2005, the company, which was once led by Vice President Dick Cheney, said that it would not accept new work in Iran but that it would complete existing contracts there.

The Department of Justice subpoenaed documents from Halliburton in July 2004 for an investigation into the legality of contracts its Halliburton Products & Services Ltd. unit, which is registered in the Cayman Islands, held for work with the state-run National Iranian Oil Company.

American companies are forbidden under United States law from doing business in Iran, dating to sanctions imposed after the 1979 Islamic revolution when student fundamentalists held 52 American hostages for 444 days.

"Halliburton has said that its operations in Iran, handled through a Dubai office, were legal because they were isolated from American operations and management.

Halliburton's prior business in Iran was clearly permissible under applicable laws and regulations," the company reiterated in the statement yesterday.

Last month, Halliburton said its chief executive, David J. Lesar, would move to Dubai from Houston to open a new headquarters there to improve the company's competitive position for Middle East contracts.

Makes sense to me. Whenever you play both sides, you can really make a killing.

This IS 1984

The cliche' "that is Orwellian" is used often these days. But with the latest article on voter fraud findings being altered to fit the Republican agenda, the aforementioned cliche' is increasingly unavoidable. The Bush administration is known to have altered global warming reports as well. These findings clearly channel images of Winston Smith's job at the Ministry of Information, where findings were scrubbed in order to match Big Brother's propaganda. Let's look at other comparisons of the Bush presidency and 1984:

Confusing, unending war. Citizens of Oceania never really knew if they were at war with Eurasia or Eastasia. I personally can't remember if we are at war with Iraq, Afghanistan, the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Islamo-fascism, terrorism, etc.

Spying on citizens. In Orwell's classic, you could almost hear Yacov Smirnov's voice while thinking "in Oceania, television watches you." We are more civilized in America however. We merely accept the fact that our phone calls or emails could be monitored at any time.

Torture. Who can forget the Smith's ordeal in Room 101, with the head cage and the rat? Our "Room 101" is Guantanamo Bay, where rights of the accused are ignored and torture has become not only acceptable, but expected.

"War is Peace" Part of the motto of Big Brother. Is this now part of Dubyaspeak? Yes, George W Bush actually said "when we talk about war, we're really talking about peace".

The end of 1984 reveals that after Winston's stay in Room 101, he accepts his lot and learns to love Big Brother. Will we choose the same fate?

Bush was Right

Last summer when President Bush said we would not be leaving Iraq during his presidency, many thought "Ah, this is just a soon-to-be lame duck President blustering and grasping at straws."

Then two weeks ago Congress passed a supplemental spending bill with a withdrawal time table. We thought "OK, here it is. Some real progress on ending this occupation." Sure the President threatened a veto. But if Congress stuck to their guns, surely they could put enough pressure on him to eventually sign it.

But alas, it's beginning to look like Congress is starting to acquiese. Senator Levin from Michigan has said "We're not going to cut funding, period." Also, it order to avoid a battle with Bush it appears that Congress will soon compromise with the President on the spending bill by removing any withdrawal timetables. In this case when Congress and the President compromise, the American public and soldiers get screwed.

This also sets a disturbing precident. Any future President can lie us into war, and be guaranteed that Congress will be too chicken-shit to do anything about it. Especially if the 110th Congress has anything to say about it....

Chris

The Nookular Option: April 5, 2007

Enjoy this special "podcast-only" podcast!! Around 5:50 Thursday morning, we were unpleasantly surprised to discover that WXUT's transmitter had shut down. This usually happens when the last person(s) in the studio forget to activate the automated DJ before leaving, and the transmitter automatically shuts down after several minutes of dead air. Unfortunately, WXUT jocks do not have access to the means of reactivating the transmitter, so when this happens, we're kind of stuck unless we can get a hold of one of the managers.

Not wanting to waste a trip into the studio, Chris and I recorded a shorter episode for podcast.

First up, a bit of gripin' and warm up-banter. It's a sad tale of beat-down talk radio amateurs, miserably cold April weather, and spilled coffee.

Next, a discussion of the far-Right's reaction to the release of the British sailors. In addition to losing a potential trigger for war with Iran, I guess these British sailors are "wankers" and "cowards". That is, if you're a columnist for the National Review. Check out this on-point "Hullabaloo" column we discussed here.

Other topics include: a review of why Medicare cannot negotiate lower prices for the drugs it purchases in bulk from Big Pharma; the Supreme Court's recent decision requiring the EPA to regulate "greenhouse" gases; and a political organization dedicated to reforming the Electoral College.

For the last segment, we're back on the air!!

Enjoy the show, and we'll see you Monday morning.

This is the podcast of Monday's show. Enjoy our new, user-friendly media player (upper right!!)

First up, a bit of belated April Fool's fun, as we run down some of the world's best April Fool's pranks. The day's news topic include new research on the possible effects of global warming, Rep. Forbes' proposed "prayer wall", and Speaker Pelosi's visit to Syria. Also, will the Iraq insurgency "follow us home"?

Also, we attempt to make the best of WXUT's new policy of only allowing on-air phone calls with 5 day's notice to management. The results are sub-optimal, but it works.

We'll have the podcast of today's show available soon. Enjoy!!

The Nookular Option: March 29, 2007

Red letter day on "The Nookular Option". WXUT's studio has been graced with...new chairs!!! No more sitting on split cushions with exposed, splintered wooden innards. Very sweet. First up, news on the climate change front -- scientists say that some ecosystems will change dramatically, and some climates may disappear altogether. Who will be the winners and losers of these changes? Next, the U.S. Attorney purge scandal heats up. Monica Goodwife pleads the Fifth -- a proud day for Regent Law School, manufacturer of nutty Bush loyalists and Geneva Convention deniers. Then, disgusted with the Bush administration, conservatives look back to the Reagan years as a golden ideal of conservatism. But are Bush and Reagan really so different? In the second half, Don and Chris are joined by Nico Pitney from the Center for American Progress, fresh from his duel with Pat Buchanan on Scarborough Country. Amongst other things, Nico discusses the Employee Free Choice Act. All this, and much more. Enjoy!!

Good show today...topics include the Dicovery Channel's controversial docudrama about a tomb possibly containing the remains of Jesus Christ; the Conservative Political Action Conference; and recent revelations of patient neglect at Walter Reed. Also, is technology derived from crashed alien spacecraft the answer to global warming? A former Canadian defense minister thinks so...

The highlight of today's show was definitely our discussion with Rob Boston of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. The discussion covers school vouchers, Intelligent Design, and the so-called "War on Christmas".

Todayâs show is a blast. Don and Chris are in rare form, and the humor gets a bit (MORE than a bit) juvenile at times. First, President Bush appoints another industry crony to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Youâll enjoy meeting âBessie Asbestosâ?, spokesperson for asbestos. Next, a deadly asteroid might hit Earth in 30 years or so. Scotland and NASA snap into action, and Don serenades Chris with the love theme from âArmageddonâ?. Then, more fun with Glenn Beck. This time Mr. Beck has unkind comments for Katrina survivors, and Don and Chris respond with some unkind comments of their own. In the next segment, habeus schmabeus!! Thatâs right, say goodbye to a 900-year old cornerstone of free societies. Then, we ought to do something about these deficits, right? So why not deep cuts to medical care for veterans? Thatâs the Bush administrationâs plan. Next, more brilliance from right-wing commentators. Did you know that schoolteachers are worse than al-Qaeda, and the theory of evolution is a 2000-year old Jewish conspiracy? You bet. Also, President Bush has plans for Osama bin Laden, and theyâre a bitâcrude. And possibly gay. But who are we to criticize? All this and much moreâenjoy!!!

First, due to the heavy snow, Chris advocates camping out in the student union. Then, the Bush administration reaches an agreement with North Korea, employing an innovative technique called "diplomacy". John Bolton blows a gasket; sane people thank God. But, will the Bush administration be able to resolve our differences with Iran non-violently as well? Next, Barack Obama announces he's running for president, drawing out racist comments from Rush, and Glenn Beck. Enjoy a fabulous Rush imitation by Chris. Then, Don and Chris discuss the right wing's odd tactic of appealing to the TV show "24" to support torture policies. In the second half, the boys are pleased to welcome John Walt, presidential candidate. For 2028. No joke. 2008 is, like, sooo yesterday. "The Nookular Option" is way ahead of the curve on covering presidential politics. John sets out his platform, and discusses the ways alternative media will shape future elections and reinvigorate democracy. After the interview, John sticks around to discuss a new Democratic bill to help unions, how dolphins can help with the "War on Terror", and much more.

First up, the "Girls Gone Wild" dudes lose in federal court, and end up sentenced to community service. We thought "Girls Gone Wild" WAS a community service!! Next, a run-down of some current internet scams, including the infamous Nigerian "419's". Then, more Iranian anti-Israel trash talkin' and Holocaust denyin' nonsense. The much-maligned ACLU defends the 1st Amendment, representing a Toledo client with some political yard signs, and an artist who paints with his...well, you probably don't want to know. The dude's most popular piece is called "Tulip Butts". 'Nuff said. In the second half, fun with right-wing columnist Chuck Norris, a chat about the Second Amendment, and a seven-legged deer. Up next, will the Senate slip into Republican hands if Senator Johnson is incapacitated long term? In the last segment, Don and Chris break discuss the tensions between Saudi Arabi and Iran, which could be the real story (politically speaking) in the Middle East. All this, and more of the day's top events. Cheers!!

Enjoy this show, which almost didn't happen due to some technical difficulties. Thanks to Matt, WXUT's station manager, for a (very!) early morning save. Today's headlines: a fake Marine gets caught, Bill Frist retires; no more iPods for Kim Jong Il; and England bans junk food ads directed at kids. Next up, Don and Chris discuss a big Supreme Court case about global warming. It's difficult to complain about the greenhouse effect while we're enjoying 60 degrees-plus days post-Thanksgiving, though... In the second half, topics include a proposal for a "North American Union" between Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and a new Bush administration memo highly critical of the Maliki goverment's ability to curb sectarian violence in Iraq. Also, is there a conflict on the horizon between Iran and Saudi Arabia? Don adds to the discussion by suggesting a new title for Dick Cheney -- "Darth Coronary". We'll be back after a short break for exams...until then!!

Headline discussion topics include the N.Y. shootings, Walmart in India, and as always, more Iraq craziness. In the second half, we're joined by the very talented Chavar Dontae. We spin tracks from Chavar's new EP, titled "One of Those Days". Chavar shares his thoughts on composition, the recording process, and preserving one's artistic indepence in an industry run largely by corporate giants.
First, Don and Chris discuss the return of open foreign policy debate. Out with much of the crazy rhetoric, and more exchange of ideas... Hopefully, this change will not be temporary. Next, "Nookular" co-founder Jeremy visits for to discuss the new OJ Simpson screed. Jeremy proposes an OJ deployment to Iraq, which, upon reflection, has a lot of merit! Then, should we enter talks with Iran, and if not, what are our options? Also, the War on Christmas begins early this year, as Toys for Tots reject a talking Jesus doll. In the second half, Chris subjects Don's umbrella to some intense scrutiny. Don is deeply shamed (I have no son!!). Next, a liberal activist is arrested for impersonating Bin Laden...on a highway overpass!! Dude, don't give Hannity and O'Reilly free material, OK? One Ward Churchill is plenty!! Other topics include lobbying reform, tax policy, and Chris makes predictions about this weekend's OSU/Michigan face-off. Cheers!!

Don and Chris celebrate, amongst other things, the arrival of sweet new headphones at WXUT's studio. But, isn't it more fun to complain about the old, crappy equipment? First, what do we make of the new, nicer Republican leadership? A cordial Bush and Cheney? Very bizzare. Then, will the "Iraq Study Group" help President Bush and the Congressional Dems chart a new course for Iraq policy? Next, Don and Chris run down the list of new Democratic policy proposals. In the second hour, we're very pleased to welcome Christy Harvey from the Center for American Progress. Christy is a self-described "de-wonkifier", and she breaks down the meaning of last week's decisive Democrat electoral victories, and the need for a stronger liberal/progressive media presence. In the last segment, Chris brings in an op-ed from the American Enterprise Institute, which prompts Don to issue a challenge to duel. Also, enjoy a call from a truck-drivin' "Nookular Option" listener who moonlights as a foreign policy expert. Let's bomb Iran, then we'll "see a whole lot of peace"!! Enjoy the show...

I think he's off to a great start, so check it out and let us know what you think. First up, there's a new player in the liberal broadcasting market called Nova M. Can they succeed where Air America has stumbled? Then, the GOP accepts money from Nicholas Boyias, the "king of gay porn". Can you say, hypocrisy? Next, Michael J. Fox backs Sherrod Brown, due to Rep. Brown's support for stem cell research. Then, the Army admits to seven instances of families of dead soldiers receiving false information regarding the deaths of their loved ones. Up next, KFC makes a big move in the battle against transfats, changing the time-honored extra crispy recipe. In the second half of the show, Don and Chris discuss a new federal report revealing that hundreds of thousands of weapons have been "lost" in Iraq. Feel safer yet? All this stuff, and lots more.

Sorry for the delayed posting of this episode. I've learned a few new things about editing on Garageband, and have been playin' around with that. But anyways... First up, we discuss Air America's bankruptcy, and what that means for the future of liberal talk radio. "The Nookular Option" can't carry the ENTIRE load, guys...but we'll do what we can. Next, more Iraq craziness, with piles of bodies, and a "constitutional government" that can't seem to do much about it. Then, Don and Brooke analyze Bush's contention that a "Third Awakening" of religious fervor is overtaking our nation. Also, Don sets out a position on reproductive rights that should become staple Democratic talking points. Last but not least, there's plenty of hot primary election action. Until next time, Nookers...

Nookular Option Interview: John Mueller

Here's our interview with John Mueller from the September 12 show. Prof. Mueller, author and professor of political science at OSU, joined us to discuss his recent article in Foreign Affairs. The article, titled "The Myth of the Omnipresent Enemy", theorizes that the absence of additional terror attacke post 9-11 has everything to do with Al Qaeda's weakness and disarray. Overblown threats lead to poor decision-making regarding anti-terrorism policy. Speaking of "overblown", be sure to advance-order a copy of "Overblown", Prof. Mueller's new book. We're looking forward to checking that out. Cheers!!

The Nookular Option: Sept. 12, 2006

Today's show is mainly a review of five years of post-September 11 policy. We're joined by John Mueller, author and OSU political science professor, for a discussion of his excellent article "The Myth of the Omnipresent Enemy". Prof. Mueller hypothesizes that the best explanation for the lack of Al Qaeda attacks since 9-11 is the near non-esistence of Al Qaeda operatives within U.S. borders. An unconventional view, but one we'd like to get heard a lot more in the mainstream media. Other topics of discussion include a new Pentagon report about the alarming increase of violence in the Anbar province of Iraq, and the Bush administration's proposal for military tribunals. To wrap up, VJ provides a nice analysis of the Tom Noe sentencing happening today.

Along the way, we also find time to talk trash about our favorite internet adversary. Enjoy!!

Great show today!! This is the first appearance of Brooke, our other new co-host. Between Brooke and Kurt, I'm very happy with our new on-air team. First, we discuss the Senate's unfortunate rejection of a proposal to limit the use of cluster bombs near civilian populations. Next, an analysis of the recent legal troubles of Rep. Jerry Lewis. He's in neck-deep with "Duke" Cunningham and Brent Wilkes in a government-for-sale lobbying scandal, and it's about time Rep. Lewis was taken to task for his ethical lapses. Then, we take a look at President Bush's proposal for military tribunals for Gitmo detainees. For the second half of the show, we're pleased to welcome Dave Schulz, our first Republican guest. Dave's a very independent thinker, with some solid proposals for good government. We were impressed by Dave's frankness, humor, and willingness to criticize his own party when called for. An informative discussion with an unconventional Republican. Enjoy!!

We're excited, 'cause this is the first "Nookular Option" in our new morning drive-time slot, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-8 AM. There was a slight issue working out how we get into the studio at a time when the Student Union is closed, but that's all figured out. "Nookular Option" co-founder Jeremy returns for the first half of the show, with some bizarre speculations regarding the death of Crocodile Hunter Steve Erwin. In the second half of the show, we welcome Kurt, our new co-host. Topics include the Blade strike (Lisa Renee of Glass City Jungle joins us for this segment), the war on terrorism, and Keith Olbermann's tour de force butt-reaming of Don Rumsfeld. Also, enjoy a rather offensive visit from Steve Scotties, our new right-wing weatherman, who we hired in the interest of balance. That's one contract we might need to consider breaching...

Nookular Option Interview: Ben Konop

We had a fun interview today with Ben Konop, candidate for Lucas County Commissioner. Don and Anthony were pleased to learn that "The Nookular Option" is Ben's favorite radio show in the continental United States. Ben discusses his intense routine of campaigning, and his perspective on the electoral landscape going into the 2006 campaign season. The conversation turns to national politics, and how the Dems can craft a winning message to "market" their platform. Ben also talks about the role of the commissioner, and some of his policy initiatives, including a proposal to help more Lucas County residents collect their Earned Income tax credit. Good stuff.

Fun show today. Don issues the "Nookular" challenge to Sandra O'Brien, Republican candidate for Ohio Treasurer. Some tough questions need answerin', and we're still a-waitin'. Don and Anthony discuss the need for addressing the problem of religious fundamentalism home and abroad. Next, there's a state-of-the-art "Creation Museum" about to open in Kentucky, and "The Nookular Option" is there to provide commentary (read: mockery). Always eager to reinforce his status as the biggest nerd on college radio, Don rebuts the creationists by quoting at length from Tom Paine's "The Age of Reason". Rather unexpectedly, Dr. Brick Brickman calls in to defend several of the museum's most controversial exhibits, including a model claiming to prove that dinosaurs hitched a ride on Noah's Ark. A fascinating discussion. Amongst other sciencey-like facts, Dr. Brickman advances the theory that dinosaurs became extinct due to...well, just check it out for yourself.
Nookular Option Interview: Rich Cordray

Rich Cordry is the Democratic candidate for Ohio Treasurer, and he stopped by to chat with us while campaigning in Toledo. To be perfectly honest, I didn't know who Rich was until a week ago, nor was I following the race for Ohio Treasurer. However, this discussion with Rich has convinced me that it really does matter who is treasurer. First, Rich is much more qualified than his opponent. He has a diverse legal, academic, and economic background. Rich has argued in front of the Supreme Court, written and passed legislation as a state representative, and also has years of experience as treasurer at the county level. For some reason, the Republican party has chosen to select their candidate based on her position on irrelevant social issues, rather than skills suited to the job. Second, Ohio needs a treasurer who will responsibly guard and invest our tax dollars. Coingate happened because of cronyism and a lack of adequate checks and balances. God forbid, if Ken Blackwell is elected governor, I'll sleep better knowing that Rich has a close eye on our tax dollars. Finally, I was really impressed with Rich's commitment to public service. I think that having him in state office will be good for the Democratic Party, and the people of Ohio. Enjoy the interview, and tell your friends about Rich Cordray.
Cheers!!

Fun show today. Don's fired up 'cause it's World War III, but Anthony quickly takes the wind out of his sails. The boys do an analysis of the escalating crisis in Lebanon, and mock Germany's proposal for an interventionary force. Don and Anthony take a call from a conservative who chose to listen to "The Nookular Option" instead of Rush Limbaugh, which Don STILL won't shut up about. If nothing else, we're about elevated political discourse that builds bridges. Next up, a breakdown of President Bush's recent decision to veto the stem cell research bill. Don waxing theological makes for gripping radio, so don't miss this discussion. Anthony voices concerns that his daily shower habits qualify as genocide. VJ then broadens the debate with a proposal to protect Anthony's "hand babies". It's science made stupid, here on "The Nookular Option". Join us, won't you?

This is Tuesday's complete show. We had two outstanding guests today, Mark Dansack and Nir Rosen. Both interviews are also posted as stand-alone items. Mark Dansack joined us at the start of the show. He's a Democrat, running for the District 46 Ohio House seat. Mark is a working-class populist Dem, and we had a great discussion about Worker's Comp reform, education funding, the minimum wage, and other hot topics. In the second segment of the show, we interview Nir Rosen, author of "In the Belly of the Green Bird". We did a phone interview, as Nir is currently living in Istanbul. He spent two years in Iraq as a freelance journalist, speaking with religious and tribal leaders, as well as ordinary Iraqis. Nir's access to militant groups is far beyond any other media source we've encountered. Good stuff. In the last half hour, Don and Anthony are joined by Jeremy and VJ for a roundtable discussion. Topics include alternative energy, and the recent jump in federal tax revenue. Also, we'd like to say thanks to all the listeners who called in today. We got so many calls during the Mark Dansack segment that we couldn't answer every call. Very cool. Enjoy the show!!

Nookular Option Interview: Nir Rosen

Nir Rosen is author of "In the Belly of the Green Bird", an in-depth look at the civil war in Iraq. Nir travelled to Iraq weeks after the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime, and has spent most of the past three years inside Iraq. Nir's Middle-Eastern ancestry and fluent Arabic allowed him to gain access to many tribal, militant, and religious leaders who would not speak with the Western Media. We spoke with Nir about the roots of Iraq's civil war, and the case for a rapid departure of American forces.

You can buy Nir's book here. Also, there is an excellent blog with links to Nir's other writings here.

This is an enlightening discussion. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!!

This did not go very smoothly, but we've learned a lot, and things should be much better next week. On top of that, the phone call-in module was acting up, which was a big pain in the ass. But, thanks to the magic of digital editing, most of the crap has been edited out of the podcast.

This week's topics include protocols for prisoner treatment, and negotiations with Iran. Also, we began getting calls (from people just listening to the show, not our friends or relatives!!), of which you can check out towards the end of the show. Maybe we'll even start building a small repeat audience. Thanks for listening!!

This week's first topic is the media coverage of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's recent death. Don proposes some creative new ideas to keep the story in the headlines (for at least another week). In the second segment of the show, we are joined by Lisa Renee of Glass City Jungle for a discussion of local politics. Topics include local blogs, campaign controversy, and the proposed "Earn & Learn" amendment to Ohio's constitution. Next, Don and Anthony chat about "Jesus Camp", an upcoming documentary about fundamentalist religion in America. Also, find out how you can join the "Presidential Prayer Team". Cheers!!

Yeah!! For real this time, "The Nookular Option" went out over the air in Toledo. We'll be doing that for the rest of the summer (at least).

Today's show begins with something unusual -- praise for the Bush administration. A deal with Iran has been reached, and non-violently, at that. Way to go, Bush & Co!! Next up, Don and Anthony dissect Bush's proposal for a constitutional amendment preventing gay marriage. The boys also evaluate the performance of 10 high-ranking Republicans on "defending the sanctity of marriage". Suffice it to say, the Repubs don't measure up. Also, Jeremy joins the discussion via phone from New York. Then, Don critiques a recent Jack Kelly op-ed from the Blade, and offers a counterpoint to the right-wing notion that Iraq is going really well except for liberal illusions about widespread violence and Iraqi government corruption. For the last segment, VJ joins us to discuss how DLC "strategists" ruin electoral opportunities for Democrats. Much to VJ's dismay, Don and Anthony share their respective love affairs with high-powered firearms.

First, Don's really charged up by Ted Strickland's visit to Toledo last Saturday. Don and Anthony analyze Strickland's energy proposals. Next, Anthony leads a discussion about the development of modern nuclear arsenals, and how Cold War experiences might guide us though the current Iran crisis. As usual, Don and Anthony solve absolutely nothing. Enjoy special visits from our friends "Duke" Cunningham and Morris the Cat-man. "Duke" is delighted by his new surroundings, and Morris is pumped about a new career in public service. Morris also offers some sage investment advice. Last, Don and Anthony share a few laughs over the brewing William Jefferson scandal, and speculate how that will play out politically.

It's the end of the semester, and Don and Jeremy are a bit less disciplined today, if you can imagine that. Today's topics include Iraq contractor corruption, human trafficking, and growing military demand for the head of Donald Rumsfeld. Don and Jeremy also analyze the minor league umpire's strike. Enjoy Jeremy's excellent George Bush impression (much more entertaining than his "Andy Rooney"). In the last quarter of the show, the boys get a visit from a group of WXUT newbie/hopefuls.
Tuesday's complete show. First, Don breaks down some weekend Iraq craziness. Then, Jeremy shares his recent experience with "ATM rage". Next, a discussion of the Abdul Rahman trial and other goings-on in Afghanistan, the "other Iraq". Finally, some big fun at the expense of a dating-service employee (so we're not mistaken for NPR). Truly, a "don't miss" Nookular Option.

This is a very short excerpt from today's show. Don & Jeremy get a call from a dating service. They were looking for "Phil", and accidentially got us instead. Needless to say, wackiness ensues. Enjoy!!

This is the first half of this past Monday's webcast. First, Don and Jeremy get a very special visit from one of WXUT's 37 managers. Then, Don apologizes to America for emboldening the terrorists by criticizing President Bush. That's followed by 10 sweaty rounds with a Rumsfeld op-ed from last Sunday's Washington Post. Don compares Bush's foreign policy to a bondo-mobile. Analysis worthy of 2:30 A.M. C-Span 3. Enjoy!!

This is our very first podcast! From this blog, you can check out an abridged version of "The Nookular Option". The live webcast goes out every Tuesday 2-4PM EST.

On this show, we discuss Senator Feingold's proposal to censure President Bush, and the worsening situation in Iraq. We also have a special guest caller. Also, enjoy my very crude comment about 3 minutes in.

Cheers,

Don
